hearing conversations in my head??

Posted by onegirlrhumba on April 13, 2004, at 4:15:17

so i've been diagnosed bipolar, borderline and adhd for a while now...pretty much stable on the meds...but just recently i've started hearing fragments of conversations IN MY HEAD. i'll be in the shower and catch myself and think "what the hell am i thinking about??" it's random stuff, totally random. but it's not MY inner narrative, it's another voice. usually two of them. this only happens for a very short period of time once or twice a day, but much more often if i'm overtired or had too much coffee.

i'm in recovery from a big drug problem...do you think maybe this is just the aftermath of an amphetamine problem? it's not frightening, it's just very confusing. anybody else have this problem?

I am shocked at the timing of your post. My sister and I drove passed our childhood home. The owner was on the porch. My father died when we lived there. He was really sick [not CA]. We were very young when he died.
The owner bought this house from my mom and remembered her well. [mom was a beauty with red hair so everyone remembers her]. The owner let us in the house. Two days later I was in the shower and heard mumbling in my head and also my name. Then I was at my in-laws and heard it again. Part of it was in my father's birth language. And as you said , it was not scarry.
Sorry I wrote so much ,but I canot believe the similarity. terrics

It may be smart to tell your T..meds may be off (nm)

Hi.
There are many things that can cause you to hear voices in your head. Sometimes it's just the internal mumbling that most all of us do. Other times, it sounds like a voice that is outside of you. These voices can mean other things.
A couple of the diagnoses that are often accompanied by voices are DID, (you can see the thread above) and some of the psychotic related disorders. Neither of these is necessarily a severely debilitating disease. I have DID, formerly called MPD. I hear voices, but they are helpfull, usually. I have one in here who is an organizer, and when I don't know what to do next, she helps me out. Most of my voices are there because they are holding something, a memory, until I'm ready to hold it on my own.
With I also have a diagnosis of bipolar 1. Sometimes I have psychotic symptoms, such as hearing voices, smelling things, seeing things, etc. These psychotic symptoms are controlled with seroquel. I do still have occasions where I will have some sort of hallucination, but mostly, I can recognize it as such.
Someone gave you the advice of talking to your T about it. I second that. What I described in my case are only two of the many things that could be going on. If it is significant enough to bother you, it is significant enough to attend to.
You don't really need to panic. You seem from your post well grounded in reality. I don't think that what's going on means that you are crazy or anything like that. It's important to remember that having psychotic symptoms doesn't mean that you are psychotic. It's just a term for the type of symptom.
Take care of yourself sweety, it' will be OK. I've dealt with many voices, for a long time. I'm not psychotic, I'm just sick. I hope to get better, and I guess I have been getting better. Whatever is going on, you'll get better.
Dee.
