Schema Therapy

Posted by Apperceptor on March 17, 2004, at 18:22:44

Hi all-

Does anyone here have experience with schema-focused therapy, particularly for characterological/"personality" disorders, either with a therapist or on your own? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts and experiences!

By the way...this isn't for school, I'm genuinely curious and considering using it myself.

Yes, I came across this little book on Schema focused therapy at a used book sale a number of years ago and brought it into my therapy. The part of the book I used most in therapy was the self-assessment in the back of the book. It helps you identify what schema you might be carrying around with you that you spend energy either trying to avoid feeling or thinking about, or trying to maintain. It was intense work for me, but very helpful. What i got out of it about some of the schema, ie, ways I have always felt about myself/thought about myself deep down inside, has become a kind of central theme in my therapy that my therapist and I can now just refer to for kind of "quick reference".

The book is "Cognitive Therapy for Personality Disorders: A Schema-Focused Approach"
by Jeffrey E. Young
