Water and dreams?

Posted by All Done on February 18, 2004, at 0:31:53

Hi everyone,

Ever since I started therapy, I've been remembering my dreams more often and I notice whenever I feel myself getting closer to my T or some emotions I've been out of touch with, I start having a lot of dreams about water. Sometimes he's in them, sometimes he's not. The water has been murky, clear, still, wavy, contained, and vast. So, there's not much consistency in the bodies of water themselves. The only consistency is that there *is* water.

Any thoughts or insight?

Thanks,
All Done

The dictionary at this site isn't too bad...

Water is supposed to represent emotion though - so sounds about right(??!)
Hope they're not nightmares anyway...

Here's my feable attempt at decyphering your dream: :)

The water represents your feelings towards therapy (or possibly toward something else).
"The water has been murky, clear, still, wavy, contained, and vast." I think maybe at times you feel insight in regard to what's going on with you (clear water), and at other times, you wish you knew more (murky). The wavy water could represent feelings of instability or change. Contained water might be a symbol of stability and safety. Vast...hmm, I'm not sure on that one.
When you say that sometimes your T is with you in the dream, it makes me wonder what the water was like in that dream (choppy or calm?). Maybe you see him as a lifegaurd? This kinda reminds me of Daisy's last homework assignment. Did you read that post? Anyway, that's my attempt. What do you think?

I thought Elle's interpretation sounded good.
I would add that what something represents in a dream depends on what it means to you. To me it seems that it might represent one's life in general. This is because it is a good analogy for the struggles of life. If you think about it you can sink or float in water. Water can be calm, peaceful, relaxing, or it can be dangeerous with big waves or currents. You can swim through the water getting to where you want to. You can be rescued or helped if you are in difficulty. See what I mean?

I'm pretty sure when I dream about water, it means I gotta go pee. :-)

Surrounded by water could also symbolize being in the womb?

There was a thread months ago about bathroom dreams. Seems that lots of people dream about searching for a bathroom (and if they find one it is often so disgusting that they can't use it). It was a lively thread... http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20030506/msgs/224974.html

Enjoy!

The main dream I remember with water and my T was where, by accident, I drove into a murky pool of water. I thought I was going to drown, but I was able to back the car out and I just got drenched. I was on my way to a session with my T and when I got there, he wanted to hold my hand to comfort me after what happened. I pulled my hand away, but he took it again and the second time it felt comforting.

I haven't read Daisy's thread, yet. I'll check it out.

Good interpretations, I think. I do feel like the "type" of water I dream about is in direct correlation to how I'm feeling about therapy and my progress (or lack of) in dealing with my emotions. Thanks!

My T tells me the same thing. He helps me with dream interpretation, but only after I tell him what I think it means.

I do see what you mean about water possibly representing one's life. Each time I've had a dream about water, it's been at a crossroad in my life or my therapy life. It seems even when I don't quite realize my life is changing, my dreams kind of let me know something's going on.

Thanks for the response, lookdownfish! It made a lot of sense to me.

And perhaps a rebirthing via therapy? (This is the first time I've ever been in therapy.) Or do you mean comfort and security? Or something else?

Thanks, Joslynn!

Thanks for the laughs, fallsfall! (nm)
