I have my own ideas on the situation, best summarized by the Secret Shame website http://selfharm.net/ and the book "Skin Game", since those best describe my own experiences. But I suppose I should move the post to Psychological Babble.
I think there are many different reasons, probably more reasons than there are people who do the behavior. Mainly I do it to stop the physical feeling of overarousal, because it works.

This makes sense to me. I will check out your sites, thanks for posting them. You have hard won knowledge. About the physical aspect,what you said reminds me of a related fact. Autistic people can get sensory overwhelm, and this can lead to self-stimulation that can be injurious. In some basic way, perhaps, the pain kind of concentrates the mind, which might stave off chaos for a time. I appreciate your share.
