Adult ADHD or Bi Polar II

Posted by Carla Marie on September 24, 2003, at 7:05:34

I am curious as to where I can receive a proper diagnosis of either ADHD or Bi Polar II? Four years ago I was hospitalized because I attempted suicide, I was given a diagnosis of Bi Polar II, started meds and was "okay" for a short period of time, I stopped my meds and quit seeing the Dr. I am a thrity three year old Mother of three children and my life has been full of constant chaos, either chaos in my mind or chaos that I have created. I have engaged in self destructive behaviors, have been impulsive, irrespondible, worked 15 jobs in ten years, have no self esteem, have trouble following things through (although I have good intentions), lie to advoid conflict, can wake up in the morning in a great mood only to find that three hours later I am depressed and back in bed again, (rapid cycling), cannot remain still or quiet, have trouble falling asleep because my mind does not shut up, sometimes sleep too much, am irritable, not trustworthy, have made more mistakes than the common person (mistakes that have affected more than just myself), act before I think and have been involved in five seperate relationships with either alcoholics or drug addicts (I am a martyr). Six months ago I began to see a psychiatrist again and have been on 900mg of lithium and lexapro, a month into taking the meds, I don't see any differences and the Dr stops the meds and puts me on 10mg of Adderal, the only thing that the Adderal did for me was give me a buzz and make me more irritable. I tried these different meds four times. I am at the point where I ready to accept that this is me and things will never change. (I have been this way since childhood). Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.

The www.amenclinic.com has an online test for ADHD.
There is a bipolar test at www.DBSAlliance.org
What is your doctor saying about your options. It seems you could be feeling a lot better than you are and I would not settle with how you are feeling now. The right combination of meds and therapy can work wonders.

Thank you for such a quick response, I will check out those web sites. I have an appt with my psych this afternoon, I too do not feel as if I should settle for this. My level of functioning has been pretty much not functioning and I am at the point that I either accept it or fix it the right way. Again, thanks!

How did your appointment go? Sorry if it's confusing, but the board here for medication-related issues is Psycho-Babble. Here's a link:
