fear of doctors

Posted by justyourlaugh on January 15, 2003, at 13:22:56

i am having a real hard time going to my md and pdocs.
i feel ashamed that i need them and that they know all the horrible stuff that i have done .
i cant look at them and barely speak.
i am starting to freek out and my next appointment is not until next week.
i have to tell him the meds are not working out for me.will he be "put off" because the combo he prescribed was wrong for me?
part of me wants to keep my mouth shut.
?must start a letter to him and hand it to him.
or mabe i could write a poem or a song-ha ha
i know i will bring some crayons and a colour wheel.

He won't be put off, jyl. Or not if he is a decent pdoc anyway. They understand that not all meds work for all people. Just be honest with him.

Isn't it funny how we patients sometimes will go to great lengths to make our doctors feel better?

Writing things down before you go in often helps. Definitely have an idea of what you want to say.

Deep breaths. :)

JYL, if your doctor is doing his job, then he needs to find the meds that work for you. And to do that, you must be upfront. I know it's hard, I struggle with a similar feeling but I know if I want to feel better, I have to be honest with the shrink and the therapist.

And please don't be ashamed (although who hasn't at one time or another) of needing them. It's not like this is something you can control. Everyone last one of us on this board needs some kind of help, you are not alone!!

Take care!
Mik
PS Bring those crayons if it helps! :-)

I think you need to remember that your pdoc is working FOR you, he/she knows that, even if you don't. So they want to do whatever is best for you even if that means a lot of different med combos, and reading this board I think that's the norm. It helps me to write out what I want to say so I can look at the paper if I don't feel up to looking at the doc. Best of luck-judy
