The images in this video are "in your face" so I chose it for the visual as well as the lyrics.
http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/3448/alliwant.html The lyrics and a short story are on this page. The song was written in the 1930s.
I have the song by Bono, Willie, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Tom Petty. (on my computer)
I explored YouTube today and found this version with graphics and a black and white film version with Mr. Garland and Pete Seeger.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGswPFJYM5g&feature=related The video appears to be in the 50s.
The lyrics have always made me sad and given me hope at the same time. We are bent. Hopefully not broken.
My daddy worked for the WPA and that saved our family. I wish that this administration could bring back similiar programs..ones that really worked...
(Reckon I should send back the $kkkkk rug that I bought after my company was bailed out to the tune of millions..or would the $1600 wastebasket be enough of a sacrifice? I could send it to someone who needs it more than I..maybe I'll send it on my $50m jet)

In reply to Economic Stimulus Package, posted by fayeroe on January 28, 2009, at 11:15:13
I read it in an investment newsletter (you know how right wing they can be).....but there was some complaint about the stimulus package and one of the suggested items jumped out at me.......
It was $500M for improved jails for Native Americans.

Good for you! No one but you has mentioned that to me.The reservations sometimes only have a two room jail. If they have to keep the offender, it is a two or three hour(or 5 or 6) drive to a "city" that can house someone...In fact, in all of my travels, I've seen two complexes that was big enough to lock anyone up in. Of course anytime an officer has to transfer someone, the tribe is without that cop.
The tribes have their own judicial systems. If I can find my copy of a speech that a Navajo judge gave at a big law conference, I'll email it to you. I think you will find it very interesting.
Alcohol, crack, meth, coke, heroin...all play a part in the huge rise in crime for the Navajo tribe. Years ago you could give a ride to a hitchhiker. I did. Now it would not be crazy to carry your gun and keep your windows up. It is illegal to bring alcohol in but that is no big deal for drinkers. LOTS of car wrecks on the rez due to drunk driving.
I am happy for the tribes.
