Well Washington State already voted that in their referendums in the general election.
I have mixed feelings about this, since I am pro choice, anti-death penalty, for stem cell research since that is really where future medicine will jump (and I'm sure people against it when faced with an illness will sardonically benefit from drug research). It gets a little more squicky for me about organ donation but I think that ultimately it saves lives until we can grow them in the laboratory.
As for assisted suicide, this was only propelled into the media with Kevorkian et alia, doctors have secretly given terminally people medication that can potentially overdose years ago.
I obviously don't believe in assisted suicide for those who don't fit the category of being in so much physical pain and are basically almost in a vegetative state that life doesn't bring any meaning any more.
As for this triggering depressed people who are suicidal to think about it, I don't think it really makes a difference. Because that would be tantamount far more obviously criminal anyhow to help someone in that fashion.
But ultimately if someone is determined to check out and their life has ceased to become meaningful in any fashion to themselves, there really isn't anything that someone can do. You can't watch someone 24/7 for their life, that also isn't living, and psychiatry knows this. Not that this is an encouragement, it's the opposite, its just reality at times.
This particular law only codifies assisted suicide it and brings it into the foreground adding a third state.
