US voting patterns

Posted by Sigismund on December 6, 2008, at 19:12:30

I read that Washington voted 93/7 in favour of Obama, which amazed me.

Does anyone have a link to voting patterns in the US, by state, city or whatever?

I think that was Washington DC, not Washington State.

Not surprising since just like central Chicago, although that's changing with more affluent Blacks moving to the suburbs, DC is extensively a city inhabited by African Americans with a white minority in areas like Georgetown and closer to the capitol, I believe.

I'm not quite sure exactly on the demographics but I believe it is one of the most polarized in that direction and is also why the mayors of DC have felt their hands tied by the US government which has ultimate veto and court power over DC, e.g. overturning the strong gun ban, considering, not to make a racist statement, DC directly outside of the capitol region is a poor, southern city with a fairly substantial crime rate.

So though Obama never made it so, and I think the colour neutral campaign strategy is really the only way to go, nonetheless a majority African American community would vote in such a manner considering the high voter turnout nationally.

In other areas of the country, minorities may or may not vote as strongly as the senior "white" population in off election years.

This doesn't answer your question but I have found this site very informative and 'cool'. (as my 9 year old daughter says about every 20 seconds)

That's the word I was thinking of -- yes, cartograms can be a very interesting way of looking at demographics. I haven't seen cartograms that non-linear though. Interesting.
