I watched with glee the election results Nov. 4 on CNN. The country has spoken and the country wants change.In small increments we are seeing this and the long-term results are promising. But to see a three-year senator from Illinois whip a 21-year senator from Arizona and win the race for president of the United States shows just how hungry and thirsty for change this country is. Out with the old, in with the new.
On a personal level I was very happy. I have watched the current party in power show continued deliberate indifference to change and diversity for so long, a lot of people had just given up on any meaningful measure of change occurring. More of the same was all we could expect.
When I saw all the obstacles and hurdles they threw in the path of change it's amazing. The incumbent party threw every mean-spirited, wicked and vile accusation they could against change and nothing would stick. The people saw through this.
It will take some time, but I predict that with the appointment of a decent Interior Department secretary and some like-minded appointments in the Bureau of Indian Affairs, we may yet see Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Federated, Home Depot, car dealerships and other things we have to drive stateside for now, right here in Indian Country.
I am convinced, where there's a will, there's a way. Thus far only the will has been lacking, but at this historic opportunity in time the will can be renewed.
Imagine not having to drive to Gallup, Farmington, Flagstaff or Winslow to spend all your money. Imagine having one of these stores in your community.
So let's look at the bright side of things. The potential of more money coming into Indian Country through a variety of programs. The potential for more paved roads. More funding for public safety (jails). More funding for grant/contract schools. More money for Indian Health Service.
On the local level we have done very well also. For the first time in Apache County government history, we have an elected Navajo sheriff who will be joining other Navajo elected officials. We can all celebrate.
Though some may argue otherwise, we are at a crossroads. Let's try to cross the road and achieve success. Remember, the naysayers and the obstacles will always be with us. It's our job to persevere and achieve success. Where there is life there is hope.
