Voting on Tuesdays

Posted by Sigismund on October 31, 2008, at 18:32:11

So this is why it's Tuesday (rather than say Saturday)?

>The reason we vote on Tuesday makes perfect sense - at least it did in 1845.

>To understand the decision Congress made that year, let's imagine ourselves as members of early agrarian American society. Saturday was for farming, Sunday was the Lord's day, Monday was required for travel to the county seat where the polling places were, Tuesday you voted, Wednesday you returned home, and Thursday it was back to work.

I'd guess not that many people (percentages) voted.

For one thing, of course, women didn't vote. Black people didn't vote. Probably most working people didn't vote. So I'd say mostly people of some means voted, otherwise they couldn't take off several days.

Wonder how that played into the governmental choices.

I'd say for sure Joe the Plumber, or well, sort of Joe the untrained guy who does plumbing for a living, and apparently hasn't paid all his taxes, but has a lot of opinions about politics, didn't vote.

You would have heard that Studs Terkel died.

We did him at uni in some subject or other.

When I hear Obama called a socialist by Rudi Giuliani or McCain I can remember Terkel.

If the election was on Sat, many people would be angry that couldn't buy liquor during their day off. lol

You can't buy liquor on election day? Guess I never tried before. Or is that a state thing?

That was actually Michael Moore that brought that to light. It's a whole chapter in his awesome "Mike's Election Guide '08". They have a listing in the book of all of the election days in many countries, I think Australia is Saturday?
That is the same day for a number of other countries.
