There was a program on TV I mostly missed called "The First Australians" looking at settlement/invasion/occupation from the Aboriginal viewpoint.
I knew some of the story (the later bits) but want to see the first few episodes. What I saw left me thinking that Hitler and Stalin just exaggerated existing patterns of colonialism and left out the nation building. It was all here, except for Auschwitz and Kolyma.
So I am encouraged by this from Obama

How do find this stuff? (I'm impressed.)
It's hard not to hold my breath until November 4th - it's felt like this election process has been going on for ages.pc

You know, I got so upset last night.
There were people on TV saying that he'd sworn an oath on the Koran.....you know the rest, you'd have to.
This is of a man who is somewhat to the right of Kevin Rudd, a pragmatist.
It blows me out.

I try to keep my education broadened by exposing myself to a variety of "news" sources. But so much of it - on ALL sides - really reads like pure fiction.
At the same time, the political climate where I live makes it a challenge to hold on to my own rather liberal-leaning beliefs. Well, I can hold on to them easily enough, but I'm not always comfortable expressing them.
This election cycle, though, I made the choice of wearing t-shirts in some places, and my buttons, sometimes, usually when I feel relatively safe doing so. Grocery shopping has been a good choice for me, as it's spurred on some spontaneous conversations that wouldn't have happened otherwise. I have caught a couple of angry glares and a few obnoxious comments, but so far no one has kicked me.

Naturally I have a great deal of sympathy for the Tibetan people, let me say in advance.
When Rudd addressed some uni students in a top Beijing university for the elite (in Mandarin) they did not like him saying that good friends tell each other the truth (about human rights in Tibet), using some category I forget that is relevant only to the Chinese. But because he had taken the trouble to learn their intellectual and political history and language, they were prepared to sit through it respectfully.
I am trying to say that the world can look very different depending on your viewpoint, and countries in the future may not see the history of Europeans the way we do now.
We shall see what 20 years brings. My guess is that the non-European peoples of the world will remember the history of the European peoples (the west) and will be in no mood to listen to lectures from them.

We have fed the heart on fantasies,
The heart's grown brutal from the fare.
