violence and right-wing punditry

In 2000 I was helping organize a small peaceful protest of the way Florida was being delivered to the Bush campaign. It was in liberal Ann Arbor, MI, and in email I received a threat from a Bush partisan who promised to show up with his gun, adding that the 2nd Amendment existed to allow him and like-minded citizens to prevent us from doing whatever it is he was afraid of.

In the end I decided he was probably all bark and no bite and nothing untoward happened... but I certainly had second thoughts about bringing my children along. This incident is a reminder that the language of violence some seem to revere can spawn real political violence.

Also note: this gunman was subdued after just three shotgun blasts by unarmed churchgoers. I doubt the law-abiding citizen packing a concealed weapon that gun-worshippers cite as the magical antidote to crazed gunmen could have done any better.

I've spoken at enough anti-war rallies in 2007/2008 and am beginning to feel that I might be a target someday for someone who supports the war. I do not invite my children and grandchildren to accompany me.

I think that someone would be quicker on their feet than someone trying to dig a gun out of their purse. And what is a small, purse sized, gun going to do to a man with that kind of weapon? I suppose that some people do carry larger handguns, but I can't see it in a church.

I hope that the NRA doesn't ride this to death. That would be very disrespectful to the victim's families and the survivors.

Fanaticism consists of redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim.

anyone we know?

I had to respond to a post due to the fact that I've been extra chatty today and didn't want to add another post.
