I used to be for capital punishment, but I think I've changed my mind over time. Nothing about whether someone might be innocent or guilty of the most horrendous crimes. It's more that I feel very sad and uneasy to see man taking the life of man, when self defense isn't a factor.
I guess I don't know the situation there well enough to know if self defense was a factor.

Same here. I'm glad his reign of terror is over and he can't hurt people anymore, but I can't be happy that it took his death to bring it about. I just wish there was a better way to get the same result. A way that would make him comprehend why what he did was wrong, and maybe even change an evil man to good. I guess that's just fantasy for now though. I don't envy the lawmakers that have to decide these things.

A bizarre thing I once read (in Utne Reader, a year or two ago), Saddam was apparently into writing melodramatic romance novels as a hobby. Supposedly, at least one was made into a movie. He even wrote one recently while in prison. Not sure how I feel about this.

some of you know that my SIL just came back from Iraq. he told me that you have no idea who the enemy is..at any time......very volatile and scary......i would not want to be an elected/or otherwise official there now.

All of this stuff about getting the Iraqis to do whatever is purely (I'm sure) for domestic US consumption so that when the time comes......
If I was an Iraqi I would want the protection of my tribal group, because it would be the only protection I'd get.

1) The Reagan Republican Administration was in love with Saddam in the early 80's. America gave Iraq tons of money, arms, top secret info..etc. Here is a pic of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam. 2) Did Saddam have a fair, open trial that the United Nations declares every human deserves? No. I am sure he would have been found guilty, but capital punishment is also a "barbaric crime".
3) America is just as much a covert dictatorship as Saddam's, as the U.S. invaded, stole, and occupied a country, and are trying to force their ways on Iraqi's. In one latest poll, 66 percent of Iraqi's want the U.S. OUT of Iraq. So, America has propped up their own dictatorship.
4) Innocent civilians killed by military intervention in Iraq:

I think the US provided Saddam with satellite pictures of the Iranian positions before the Iran/Iraq war.
Credits for weapons as well?
Maybe gave the OK for the attack? (I've no idea).Was it 2,000,000 who died for that geopolitical calculation?

Good and bad is a word often used by many politicians on that world. There are people such as you and me at different locations. There are also formerly trained Iraq surgeons from College of Medicine, Baghdad doing "good" things for patients with severe cv diseases at Texas (Houston).
