Dear Editors,
In your recent About Town article Nancy mentioned Logo, the new
cable network channel for gays and lesbians. While avoiding
housework one afternoon last week I stumbled across this channel.
I didn't pay that much attention to it besides noticing it was a
channel I wasn't familiar with, so I kept on surfing. I must have
had a hard time finding a show worth watching because a short while
later I landed on Logo again. Just as I started to leave it, I
heard something about it being the new channel for gays and
lesbians. I punched the information button to see what Directv had
to say about it; sure enough, the commercial was confirmed. As you'd watch any train wreck, I left this channel on out of
curiosity. Nancy, if you're still looking "forward to seeing
programs that promote an understanding of the gay and lesbian
community, rather than mocking the stereotypes," you might need to
look elsewhere. How will advertising sex help to eliminate the
stereotype that being homosexual is only about the sex? It only
took approximately three minutes of viewing the soft pornography
they used as commercials to determine this was a channel that
needed to be blocked from our home. There was no advertising of
comedy, movies, game shows, DIY or news--just sex.Congratulations to those pushing the liberal agenda, you have
scored a double victory: First, a gay channel and second, the
elimination of those pesky rental fees!

I'm sorry, but I have to take issue with a couple of things.
First - I don't know what a "liberal agenda" is - other than a catch phrase. I consider myself quite liberal on some (mostly social) things and quite conservative on other (mostly fiscal) things. But the only agenda I have is that I want to live in a world with more tolerance and understanding, to help those less fortunate and to live my life in relative peace and quiet.
Second - you only watched for three minutes? That doesn't seem like enough time to draw a conclusion. I've just looked at LOGO's web site and I (though straight) can see a lot of stuff I would like to watch.
I don't have dish. I hope they put it on regular cable.

Not at all. Read it again. I asked how advertising sex is going to change the stereotypes. I think the stereotypes should be challenged. I just don't see how the advertising would do this; it was reinforcing it. I'm not understanding why the opportunity is being wasted.
You should apologize.

Ok, maybe it wouldn't take terribly long to decide if the kiddos should be watching it.
But I still don't understand how that was enough to justify writing a letter to the editor.

> But I still don't understand how that was enough to justify writing a letter to the editor. That would help, wouldn't it? I should have included her article, but I tossed the paper. The author of the article (Nancy) was going on and on about how this was going to finally be the one thing that would magically change the stereotypes. More or less saying you were anti-gay if you didn't love watching Logo.
There has been a big huff in town because the president of Logo is from this area. (Most small towns are pretty small-minded in my experience.) A couple of months ago there was this big article about him being promoted at MTV, and he was wonderful (hometown boy make it VERY big). Then all of the sudden Logo comes out, the community finds out what the hometown boy is doing for MTV and people are freaking out. I felt like she had gone overboard in singing its praises to try and counter some of the negativity.

Well, then, the 'truth' is again somewhere in the middle.
The channel doesn't seem to me to be a cure-all for bigotry, but it doesn't seem to be anything to do with a 'liberal agenda' either.
It's a tv channel. Nothing more. Nothing less. Like most, some will like it, some will hate it. I hadn't heard of it until now, but I've looked at the web site and saw a lot of movies that I really like. When (if) it becomes available in my area I'll probably watch some of it.
Many thanks for pointing it out.

> What are you talking about?IMHO most of us (80+)%, probably over 90% are somewhere in the middle, we defy attempts at classification. In a group of extreme liberals I would probably be considered a conservative and visa versa. I don't even bother to speak up when my wife's family gets going about those "damn liberals". Yet I have what would be considered a very conservative viewpoint on many issues. I think most people are this way.

> Enjoy!I'm a guy, the thought of sex with another man is not at all appealing to me, I certainly wouldn't want to marry another male. I also don't like onions, seafood, wrestling, shopping or the WNBA. Obviously others enjoy these things, but maybe we should ban them all. I know I think less of people who like onions on their burgers and they must be stopped! To quote the Bible "do unto others what you would have them do unto you". I think that's the verse, pretty close anyway.

I looked at the LOGO web site. My guess is that the channel is somewhere between "advertising sex" and "magically" changing stereotypes.

Maybe we should have a "moderate uprising."
Smack that pendulum back into the middle and keep it there.

My letter did get printed in the local paper this week. One of my friends (who is gay) called to thank me for writing it.
This is the end of the thread.
