Shakespeare and War

Posted by gardenergirl on February 3, 2005, at 22:19:36

I just saw a performance of Henry V last weekend. There is a scene in that play when King Henry is walking amonst his troops the night before the battle of Agincourt, a battle where the English were outnumbered by the French five to one. The King is in a cloak, so the troops do not know who he is. They talk about how they wonder if they are in a just war, but they trust the king's decision. They also say that any sin for their actions in an unjust war falls on the King and not themselves. Now Henry disagrees and says that the king is only but a man. It's an excellent scene.

And hmmmmmm, soldiers wondering if they are being put at risk and also killing the enemy for unjust reasons?

I LOVE how universal Shakespeare's themes are!

<<< Carefull! Some make the same connections to the Bible, the Urantia Book, the Tibetan Book Of The Dead, The Koran, and Monty Python!

However, I have lasting and durable respect for the words 'The Bard', 'The Upstart Crow'.... I bought a multi-media CD-ROM of 14 of Shakespeare's plays; read and listen as the words go by on the screen, $9.95.... Love it!
