My Last Post Here,(Re: please be civil » Jonathan)

Apparently there is a "be positive" rule on this board that I was not aware of. I don't think I can carry on an productive discussion about politics or the state of the world and always be positive. It would only be a matter of time before I got a warning or was blocked from posting. Therefore, hasta luego and keep hope alive!

I agree completely.. I don't think it is possible to have a politics board and at the same time enforce Dr. Bob's "civil" rules It's just not possible.. I was hoping he'd make an exception..

Honestly has anyone ever been in a conversation with several people of different poliical leanings without it getting a little heated?? I mean what were we thinking here... this is a really sensitive and heated subject for some people.. BOB should lax his civil rules for here at least.

I think this might be still evolving. There is a discussion on Admin about this board that has included some differing views. I don't know if it will affect da rules, but hang in for a bit longer, please?

I value your thoughts.

Thanks Gardengirl. I value your thoughts too. It's just that the rules for this board (the best I can understand them) are more appropriate for a therapy group than for a public forum where people with different perspectives about the world can share their views. I wholeheartly agree with the importance of maintaining a civil discourse (my background is in human resources and mediation). But it's just too limiting if critical statements are not allowed, whether it be about Bush, Kerry or Bin Laden. The key (in my view) is that one should not direct criticism toward individual posters. People can have opposing views and still be civil to each other, as well as learn from each other. It's a characteristic of a mature adult.

But it is not too difficult to be critical about particular policies, or traits of a person. You can say "this quote is wrong" <and hopefully back that up>, but you can't say "see = he's a liar and you can't trust anything he says"'

And I think it is a good thing to discuss these things with enforced civility. If we can stick to particulars and keep open minds we can - perhaps - learn something from each other.

I myself am looking forward to some stimulating discussions.
