O.K FM got here first : ), but my question is similar (though highly unorganized). So if I may piggy back on her post...
I posted a misery-filled rant on med board already. You're welcome to read the weepy details. What I want here are the humble opinions of the brains that lurk here--feel free to simplify language and terms (please).
I know dexedrine lit up my brain--pleasure, desire, emotion--well, o.k. a little pressure and anxiety too, but for the first time I thought maybe this was how normal, healthy people feel. Yes, It releases dopamine.
(Why do some depressions seem to only respond when stimulants are added?)
Is long term stimulant use harmful?
Can I take mirapex and recoup some dopamine effect?
Some of you with experience and knowledge, can you write or babble me? I've read some--I just feel like I'm not understanding something essential to my condition and treatment. I'm ready to entertain all opinions!

Hope you get some responses....I am not very lucky on this board for some reason... will follow your post as I want to know what exactly the stimulants do (I read lots of posts and am very confused). Sounds like it inhibits dopamine reuptake.... Is that correct? If so, what do the AP's do....block it?????

I would keep taking Dexedrine but would also acknowledge that it wasn't the best for me and would therefore take the minimum effective dose with breaks now and then.
You could try memantine with it to limit tolerance.
There have been threads about that but it's beyond me.

Does Ritalin inhibit reuptake?
Anyway, one of them does and one of them doesn't, IIRC.

I believe mirapex and memantine both have great potential. Mirapex could help with dopamine and may protect dopamine stores. Memantine has been shown to protect against inflammation in the hippocampus.

I believe d amps are more harmful than stimulants like ritalin. At least that is what some recent evidence shows. Nothing conclusive

Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine all block the reuptake of dopamine and less potently norepinephrine. They also cause the transporters to work in reverse to release more dopamine.
Anti psychotics block dopamine at some receptors. Supposedly at a low dose anti psychotics enhance dopaminergic transmittion, but i'm not sure how.
This is the end of the thread.
