Does Hasimotos Thyroiditis mean Weaker or Stronger

Posted by Phillipa on May 3, 2008, at 16:45:10

Does it mean a weaker or stronger autoimmune system. Was googling something else and what pops up is a site that says the autoimmune system is weaker and makes you more prone to diseases. I thought since it attacked own tissues it would get the foreigner that attack you even faster? Love Phillipa

Thanks for being gracious about that. I think I was rather cranky at the time as I'd been sick with a bad cold for about a week. Finally feeling better, and now I feel like I was being rather pissy. Sorry.

Hashimotos's throiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism (deficiency of thyroid hormones) in the US, while world wide the most co-immune disorder. Antibodies are substances normally produced by body's immune system in response to infection or invasion of the body by a foreign substance. Anti-bodies react with antigens (foreign substances) and neutralize them. However in some cases body starts producing antibodies against its own organs. This is what happens in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

When did you go to nursing school, Phillipa?
