I realize this might be moved to eating or health or something, which is okay with me, but I was wondering if anyone has tried the lap band procedure to lose weight? Being as I seem to have no willpower and my struggle with weight seems to be getting worse instead of better, I've been wondering if I should try the lap band procedure. It sounds a lot better than the bypass surgery, but it still sounds a wee bit scary! Of course, if I continue as I'm going, I am in danger of a heart attack or stroke which is just as bad!
So anyone have any experience with this, or know someone who has?

The Simpson's episode tonight was about Homer having gastric bypass. And of course he experienced my secret biggest fear, a bunch of extra stretched out skin. In the end the lesson was, don't try plastic surgery until its perfected! Weird!

A friend of mine had it and she has NOT done well. She didn't feel good from the surgery, was still always hungry. It did not work for her and she even went back for several adjustments.
On the other hand I do know someone who had the bypass surgery and she lost a LOT of weight 100 lb or so. Do not know how she is doing now, she moved. But she was always throwing up at work in the bathroom if she ate the wrong thing.
I'm sure others have done well, but these are two people I knew fairly well.

The person really must be motivated for bypass surgery as I worked with a nurse who just munched small amounts of food continuously and gained weight . Phillipa

T you posted pics one time and you're not fat doubt if you'd even be a candidate for bypass surgery now the tummy tuck and lipo will eliminate all the loose skin. Some go on to that after losing a lot of weight as the elasticity of skin doesn't go back into place. The older you get the worse it is. You're pretty young a consult maybe just some lipo? Just a thought if you're serious. Phillipa

Thanks everyone! That's really what I was wanting to hear, if anyone has heard any horror stories. I definitely want to know the worst case scenerio before I even consider it.
I may not be overweight enough for that alone to qualify me for the surgery, but my high blood pressure combined with being overweight does.

Well if you want a horror story, I was watching "Big Medicine" on TLC the other week and the doctor's sister (I think that is right) had had lap band and lost a LOT of weight and looked great, but she was having problems with her band. She couldn't throw up and was sick or something. So she went to her local emergency room, and they didn't know what to do, or how to help her or how to adjust her band. So she had to fly halfway across the county back to her brother who is a specialist so he could adjust her band and stop the nausea and severe pain.

Texas Chic, what is your height and weight if you don't mind saying. Will your insurance cover the
procedure and is there a weight requirement?Do you exercise at all? That is the best thing for everything, although it is extremely hard to condition yourself to doing it. I started a few months ago after doing nothing for about 2 years and it is starting to make a difference. I gained lots of weight in the last few months myself from either Nardil or menopause.
The advantages of exersise are much better for high blood pressure since you actually change your blood vessels and improve the blood flow to all areas of your body.
I have heard of many people having the bypass procedure gain alot of weight back becasue they can't change their eating habits. They look good initially but then its a joke since alot of the weight comes back and it was all for nothing. YOu have to be extremely disiplined but that is not usually possible since discipline is the basis for eating moderate amounts and exercising, so if you are disciplined, weight is usually not a big problem, although many of us are never slim enough..
I would try the old fashioned way first, less risk and if it works you can be proud of that accomplishment. MY girlfriend lostover a 100 lbs that way after she got divorced, her biggest motivation for weight loss.

OMG! You really want me to tell everyone that!!! Okay, but in my defense I have HUGE BOOBS! (Heh, heh!). 5'6 225 lbs
At my skinniest and most anorexic, I was 130 lbs (size 8), which on me was enough to have friends telling me they were worried about how skinny I was. And with chics, that's pretty serious!
The weight requirement for Lap Band is at least 100 lbs overweight, which I'm not. I would actually be a decent healthy weight at 155-165 (around a size 12-14) and the least I'd want to get down to is 140-150 (size 10-12). But if my weight is combined with something like high blood pressure (which I have), then I qualify for the surgery.
> Do you exercise at all?No. My problem is I just can't seem to get started. AND I binge eat as a way to sooth my anxiety.

Yeah, I know it is, I guess I just feel that if I did something as serious as surgery, I would have a hardcore reason to push myself. In my mind, after all that, to give up would be unthinkable!
> I have heard of many people having the bypass procedure gain alot of weight back because they can't change their eating habits.
I think once I started losing the weight, I would have the incentive to keep it off. Maybe that's what everyone thinks, but to me this makes sense. Right now when I think about it, I think, why deny myself the temporary satisfaction of binging and couch potato-ness, when the payoff of exercise is so far in the future, and I'm so likely to fail!
I appreciate all you advice! I will at least attempt it on my own before doing something as serious as surgery. In fact, maybe just deciding to seriously consider surgery would motivate me to
exercise!-T

TC,
But are you sure your insurance would cover it? Mine specifically does not, nor breast reduction surgery. It doesn't matter what your weight or size or medical problems are.

I've looked it up, it pays for 80%. That would mean approximately $3000 for my part.
