Blemishes

Posted by Wildflower on March 1, 2007, at 17:01:30

Most of my life, I've been lucky and haven't had too much of a problem with acne or blemishes. Now that I've surpassed the 30 mark, I now have horrible blemishes on my face and upper chest. It's quite embarassing. I'm too young to be wearing tops that button all the way up to my neck.

Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated...

Have a look at:

http://www.acne.org/

A sort of babble for acne users!!

I have acne too and I'm 26 although I've had them my whole life.

Kind regards

Meri

Thank you so much! This site is big help. Perhaps soon I'll be able to face the world again. ;-)

How are you finding the site?

I find it very useful.

I'm determined to conquer my acne!! I've already started up again on the Benzyl peroxide cream. It does seem to work quite well.

I'm also thinking that a lack of zinc and too much diary might be aggrevators. Hmmm.

We'll see I suppose!

Kind regards

Meri

PS there's an 'adult acne' board on the acne.org site and there's alot of people 30plus on there.....which is relatively depressing, I was hoping mine would go away!

The site is very imformative but I'm a little upset to find so many people with acne in their 30s. It makes me feel better yet worse at the same time.

I do have one question maybe you can answer about the "routine" on the site. They say to wash your face, apply medication and then moisturizer.

I find it odd to add moisturizer on top of acne medicine. How do apply foundation or makeup to this without it looking cakey?

I've found that the sulpher-based products are best for me to dry up acne but I may switch to benzyol-peroxide for a bit since most site users recommend it.

Ah, now this is something I've just recently discovered (and it makes sense to me anyway!). I thought that because I had acne and relatively oily skin, that I didn't need a moisturisor (um, sorry my spelling is off). But, I think you do. I mean, the skin on your face is very sensitive and apparently even oily skin needs moistursing. Acutally, your skin might be trying to 'over-compensate' the harsh drying chemicals and therefore producing more oil. If you see what I mean. I use Dr Hausakca's normalising day oil and its great. And seriously it was weird at first, applying oil to oily skin, but it really does work nicely.

On the acne.org site they also suggest moisturiser because of the peeling and drying effect of the benzoyl peroxide. It helps counteract that.

As for cakey make up, well I don't know. I use Clinque's 'superbalanced' foundation and that seems to be relatively okay.

And another thing, don't scrub! Scrubbing, apparently, makes things worse, which also makes sense - your skin is inflamed and irritated anyway, so you don't need to scrub to make it any better!

I used to use clinque's 3 step stuff and my acne didn't get any better. Now, I'm using a much gentler routine, and its getting there.

Perhaps your deficient in zinc? I'm going to start taking zinc supplementation to see if it helps any. Do you have white marks on your fingernails? Pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc.

Perhaps it is hormone related? Or has there been a change in envirnmental factors? Sometimes humidity and things like that cause it.

Yeah I find it pretty depressing to think that I'm going to have to continue battling acne until I'm um, 40? I always assumed I'd grow out of it....eh well.

Kind regards

Meri

>>>I'm a big fan of Clinque's toner and moisturizer but lately they don't work. I just bought the Neutrogena three step system. I'm mostly concerned with acne on my chest. It almost looks like an allergic reation of some sort but I'm not sure. I'll try the Neutrogena stuff for a few days and then head to the doc if it gets worse.

>>>I haven't noticed any white marks...but I'll keep an eye on it.

>>>I have no idea if it's hormone related. I do take birth control which should keep my hormones in check. The dry, cold air may be a factor but a have a humidifier inside.

Time will tell...

One thing I noticed is that I get blemishes when I wash my face while wearing rings. Just a simple thing I discovered by accident, but made a big difference when I took the rings off first. I guess the rings were irritating my skin when I rubbed my face, or I was allergic to the gold.

P.S. I had clear, beautiful skin until my 30s. So I think something changed hormonally?

But now that I don't wash my face with rings, and use acne wash on my back (neutrogena makes it or you can get generic in some places, has salilycic-sp?- acid)it's fine.
