Is my diet healthy?

Posted by Deneb on March 1, 2007, at 19:07:56

I've been doing a modified Atkins plan for 11 days now and I've lost 3 pounds. I aim to eat about 20 g of carbs (minus fiber) a day so I will be in ketosis. I eat as much low carb veggies as I want, veggies like romaine lettuce and broccoli. I limit my fats, but I'm not doing low fat. I choose foods which are lower in fat, unlike the real Atkins plan. Instead of using a tbsp of oil in stir frys I use a cooking spray. I eat mostly lean protein and low carb veggies. I also eat some low fat cheese. I aim to eat about 1000 - 1200 kcal a day.

Is this healthy?

I had an egg white omelet with cheese and ham for breakfast (one gram carb). Then I had a cup of coffee with sweetener and half and half (about 3 grams carbs). I didn't eat anything until about 8 PM. I shovelled some snow before 8. I was really hungry. I was so hungry I felt faint or something. I didn't feel so bad until after I shovelled snow. I still kind of feel weird after eating. It's like I'm anxious or something. Is it possible this is caused by low blood sugar?

I feel kind of scared right now.

You should have eaten before your exertion. You pushed your body hard into ketosis (carb starvation is unnatural), and your body has not yet fully adapted to deriving energy from sources other than glucose.

You need to understand these things better, methinks. You could have fainted.

Yeah, I'm going to make sure I don't get that hungry again.

I'm aiming for ketosis. I want to burn fat all the time.

Instead of cooking spray, I suggest olive oil, or diet margerine, which is low in saturated fat, high in good fats and low calorie, plus it tastes just as good as butter. Just some extra help.

Also carbs are acceptable if you walk fast for about 10min half hour after you eat it.

It is most deffinitly low blood sugar. The best thing to do is eat a bunch of carbs shortly before you execise, more carbs for more exercise. All that protien you ate probably didn't kick in to 2-3 hours later. You could use protien if you wait 2 hours, 3 for beef, 2 for chicken or eggs and cheese. If you get shaky, tired, weak and hungry, most likely your blood sugar is low.

You actually burn more calories if you eat before execising, including fat. Just don't eat a lot, but not too little.
