No, it doesn't work to lose weight, and there's no good reason to do it.
Fasting will trigger conservation efforts in your body, so that you won't starve during the famine that's obviously hit. Your metabolism will slow down, and so you'll not only not lose weight, you'll also tend to hold on to all nutrients once you start eating again, so you're more likely to gain weight.
And fasting is just plain a bad idea. You need food for the same reason your car needs petrol...
