Elevated ALT and AST

Posted by Dinah on April 25, 2006, at 19:12:09

I've always had it, even when I was young and healthy. I know it means a swollen liver with dying liver cells and that those are substances in the liver cells that get released when liver cells die.

But how high do they have to get before you get alarmed? My AST was 46 which isn't out of line for me normally. But my ALT was 88, which is high even for me.

They did tests for Hepatitis, and they were negative. I think they said I have a fatty liver. I got a Hep B I think it was, vaccination lately. Could that cause the 88?

I've always been protective of my liver, and warn doctors when I get drugs that affect the liver that I have always had bad AST and ALT results and that they always thought my dad had cirrhosis or hepatitis and he didn't. Well, eventually he did. But not back when they did all the tests. Should I not worry about it so much?

I know I should ask my doctor. And I have. But doctors really don't tell you all that much.

Dinah ask that a specialist look over the results. Especially if you Dad eventually ended up with hepatitis. Good luck Love Phillipa

He ended up with cirrhosis. Sigh. But he had an enlarged liver for many years before that. They did biopsies and everything. He did drink. His whole family drank, and a fair number died of cirrhosis.

I guess it's hard to tease out the genetic component of that.

You're always so supportive, and I really do appreciate that.

Tomorrow's weigh in, I suppose.

The funny thing is that I looked at summer skirts yesterday and all my usual size was way too big. Despite the weight gain and my own perception that my belly is huge. Maybe they were pre-shrinkage. It made me feel good for a while though.

Dinah even if they are elevated I'm sure there are meds and things you can do to prevent further damage obviously no drinking. But today they can transplant a small portion of someone compatible's liver in you and both of your livers will grow to normal size. But check with the specialist to make sure there is not another reason something with blood supply to it. We all have something in our background. Or maybe a lot of us. Please don't down yourself I do the same thing and it is makine depression and anxiety worse. Wouldn't it be nice to have unlimited funds?Love Phillipa
