My son has strep throat... ick!

Posted by spriggy on December 17, 2005, at 19:06:42

My poor guy- he's 10 (but autistic) so he can't accurately describe how bad he feels- I just mostly get moaning with the occasional " Huuurrrtss.."

Anyway, his fever has been running up to 103, he won't eat (or drink!), and I didn't want to wait until Monday for him to get seen.

So it's strep (which I thought it might be).

Problem is, he won't eat and the antibiotics are supposed to given with food. How do you manage that?

I just had him eat one cracker (all he would manage) and drink a sip of gatorade. Hopefully he won't puke up his meds!

I HATE seeing my children sick; I'd take it from them in a heartbeat. Nothing makes me feel more helpless!

Well the positive is that within twenty-four hours he should feel better. But then all of you will probably get it it is highly contagious. Fondly, Phillipa

He's doing a bit better- he stopped vomiting (hallelujah!) and has been able to keep down his antibiotics today.

He's just very, very lethargic. Lying on the couch with the occasional moan.

I'm giving him Motrin and alternating Tylenol in between.

I don't know that I've ever seen him this sick.

If he refuses to take his antibiotics or pukes them up you can ask your doctor about an injection.

I.

Sorry he's so ill Spriggy. Boy, do I know what you mean (most parents, do, I'd think) - mine's 23 now, and suffers chronically from IBS...but is such a soldier about it...and I still wish I could take it from her. (Ah, but God knows more than I, so guess I'd better let Him handle who has which trials...)

Would your boy drink maybe a smoothie? Or a milkshake of some sort, maybe made with some banana in it for substance? (although that may gross him out with strep - too thick). That would be a way to get "food" into him without chewing/eating.

My daughter had it...yes, count them 5 TIMES from age 6 to about 14. Doctors said, one more time, and your tonsils come out...and she never had strep again! Scared well? lol!

From all that experience, the throat is so sore swallowing much but ice water, popsicles and maybe ice cream (if dairy doesn't upset him) is pretty awful. The laying around and lethary is normal for strep. I think...if she tried to do anything involving walking around - too soon - she relapsed. Mine had to have medicine by suppository a couple times (can't remember why) so maybe I'm saying...it could be worse....! Boy, do kids *love* that process....!

Praying for a speedy recovery for all in your family, Sprig...

I think I have it now...

Now my throat hurts really bad and I am sick to my stomach.

I'm going to go ahead and get checked tonight by a doctor at our church; if it is strep, I want to get on meds now so I can be all better for Christmas.

Tis the season.

nevermind.. I KNOW I have it now. (nm)
