Morphine for severe sciatica + possible herniated

Posted by Colleen D. on November 30, 2005, at 17:07:38

disc. It's been 3 weeks now since the pain started and tonight it was at its worst. I have tried Tylenol #3, Vicodin and finally morphine to help me manage the pain. X-rays showed nothing unusual so I had a MRI on Sunday. I'm still waiting for the results which I will get at my appt. tomorrow afternoon. This is the first time I've taken morphine. At first my doc prescribed 15mg of the extended release kind. I could take 1 tab every 4 to 6 hours. After 3 hours I would be in extreme pain again, so I was prescribed a different kind. It's just a 15mg tab that I can take 2 of every 4 hours. I HAVE to take 2 and I still only get about 3 hours of relief. I thought morphine was "the big guns" and I shouldn't need this much of it. Anyone here with experience with or more knowledge of the drug? I don't know how I'm going to get through the night at this rate!

Thanks,
Colleen

Morphine dosage is VERY variable. 30mg isn't that much. What brand are you taking?

I had a herniated disc once and it took 3 ER visits to confirm the diagnosis. They didn't give me pain meds. Sent me to a physical therapist that made it worse. But it resolved on it's own. Hang in there it will get better in time. Fondly, Phillipa

combine morphine with 1200mg neurontin , empty stomach and they work very syrngistially or hours. Trust me on this, ask your doctor, for neurontin. neurontin + morphine is very very good for your type of pain.

Thank you all. Feeling better. Off the morphine.

I couldn't take the HORRID constipaton and itching. I would wake myself up in the middle of the night scratching my head and my back. I have scabs. :-( Whew.

MRI revealed dehydrated discs (degenerative disc disease beginning) in my lumbar spine and mild displacement of the nerves bilaterally where the lumbar and sacral discs meet. (So that's why it felt like someone hit me in the lower back with a baseball bat?!?!?)

While taking a hot shower last Thurs. I reached up and something shifted and I have MUCH less pain now. I'm now taking only Tylenol, a muscle relaxer and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory called Voltaren for this condition and the combo is working wonderfully. Thanks again for responding!

:-) Colleen
