I have been taking Klonopin for 11 years for Generalized Social Anxiety. I must admit that before I took it I could hardly go to the store, stand in a line at a bank, talk to people. Before it, I just self medicated with Alcohol. Though the 2mg I have been taking for years helped me, I have always been a little "flat" and slightly depressed. I have never responded well to any anti depressants for the problem. I have tried to get off Klonopin, but even .25mg changes have been hell for me. It took me 6 months to get from 3mg to 2mg. My doctor (one of the best in the world) told me long ago about Lyrica. That when approved (which it finally is)could possibly replace Klonopin and act as an anti depressant. I have been on Lyrica for 2 weeks. My doctor has me on a fast track to dose down on Klonopin while dosing up on Lyrica. The whole process will be done in 3 weeks. I'm half way through it and my mood is up, my anxiety down and I can't believe I'll be totally off Klonopin in a week or so. The Lyrica seems "clean" with only the side affects of better sleep and mood. I have taken sooooo many anti depressants and other psyco tropic meds. I think Lyrica is going to help many people. It works on GABA, but differently than the benzo's do. So the withdrawl problem is reduced. I've been through it all and think this is a break through!!!!

I am quite intrigued. I liked klonopin too except it made be a bit depressed. Glad you're having success, enjoy!

Hi RobertDavid,
That's so good that you found a med that is right for you and helped with the transition off the other one. i've never heard of Lyrica before yesterday- the dr that i saw for severe pain prescribed it for me, to help with pain relief.
What kind of med is Lyrica? Is it like Neurontin? If you don't mind the question,
How does it make you feel?Take care,
kerria

Lyrica is the replacement drug for Neurotin (as neurotin is now generic). I'm told it's basically the same, just more potent (it delivers more drug, but at lower doses). So the side affects should be less with lyrica. So far lyrica has helped me with withdrawing from klonopin which has been so hard before, but I really won't know how well it works for me alone until I'm all the way off Klonopin. The jury isn't in yet as far as it being mono treatment for GAD/SAD.
This is the end of the thread.
