Cannabis relief in IBD
Scientists investigating anecdotal evidence that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) find relief from using cannabis have found a possible explanation for this effect.
After examining bowel tissue samples from healthy people and IBD patients and analysing the concentrations of cannabinoid receptors in the colon, researchers found that colon tissue samples from healthy people tested positive for the CB1 receptor, while the tissue from IBD sufferers became more positive for CB2 receptors as their disease progressed.
The researchers propose that the CB2 receptor is a potential target for the development of cannabis-based drugs to treat IBD. They also found that the CB1 receptor helps promote wound healing in the gut lining (Gastroenterology 2005;129:437).

I don't know Link.
I only know one person with IBD - Crohn's disease in his case - he's always in hospital..... on steroids, immunosuppressants, methotrexate, a special liquid diet etc. He's had a lot of surgery. Perhaps he should try cannabis!
Oh actually, I did once know someone else who'd suffered from IBD - ulcerative colitis this time. He's got a colostomy pouch now. He said 'when I woke up from the surgery I immediately knew I was going to live'.

I've got to ask the same question I asked in my post about amphetamines for Parkinson's--why should patients suffering *now* have to wait for the pharmaceutical industry to pump out an expensive, "accepable" medication based on cannabis when marijuana is available at this very moment? Is pot so bad that patients should have to wait 10-15years for "pot-based" drugs that will be extremely over-priced and have their own side-effects? By all means, researchers should develop compounds that maximize potential benefits while minimizing potential side-effects, but what should we do in the meantime? Wait around? Why?
