I went to the beach with my family and got the most horrible sunburn on my legs. I put on sunscreen but not enough and not right away. :-( I'm also very fair-skinned. So my legs feel today like they are made of hot glass and it hurts to walk. I already took a cool bath and I've been slathering on the aloe vera gel. Is there some amazing home remedy for sunburn that anyone knows?

One thing I always do is lather on the Noxzema. It helps a lot.
I hope you feel better soon!

My sincerest sympathy. My scalp is now in the peeling stage, and I've got a spot on the back of my shoulder that my husband has warned me not to try to look at. :)
If you find anything, let me know.
How was the beach? Other than overflowing with UV rays.

Ugh, I'm fair-skinned, too. I had more than my share of burns like that as a child and sometimes even now.
Noxema is always good. I've found soaking a washcloth in tea is good, too. Make it really strong, and cold, of course. No hot tea on burned legs! ;) And use like a compress.
Sorry you are hurting,
gg

Ouch indeed!
One important thing is to drink plenty of water.
When I was a kid and got sunburned I used to cover myself with Ozonol. I think you can only get it in Canada though. It's fantastic stuff.
Other than that, try to keep your skin cool and bring any swelling down.
I hope your skin heals soon!

I've always heard to take asprin or ibuprophen or an NSAID. It helps releave the inflamation. Supposedly, if you take it right after the burn it will also help keep it from being so bad.

I would buy gallons and gallons of aloe vera and sit in it all day!! Or maybe brew myself a bathtub of cold tea to sit in!!
I am walking funny. :-( My fiance has already laughed at me. And the people at work tomorrow are going to be quite amused.

Sorry you're having to endure this. You know me...I'm bursting to give you the mommy-type lecture about sunscreen and applying before you even leave home...SPF 30 at least...gallons..!!
But you know, please ignore that (I'm done now, I promise) 'cause you have a mom AND you're a grown woman who knows what she's doing! It's just...a pet peeve of mine. Been slathering on the SS for about 15 years at least now, every day, all year on face/neck, backs of hands, ears, and I won't even tell you how much in summer....
Anyway, back to trying to help. I've been badly burned probably 4-5x between ages 16-25 or so. Noxema felt really good to me...and I put it in the fr*g. The cold against your hot skin is almost too much, but I liked it. It didn't burn me at all - maybe try a bit on a tiny spot? I think lots of people use it. Maybe 'cause sunburn doesn't involve any breaks in the skin, the menthol only cools, doesn't penetrate anywhere enought to sting?
Also try putting your aloe in the fr*g. Do take the ibuprofen, or aspirin, if you tolerate it okay. Swelling is a big reason it's so uncomfortable...stretching the damaged skin and all. You may feel ill, and it could blister tomorrow if it's really bad. If so, a doc may need to look at it...but we'll hope not. I found aloe - and especially if you can get it right from the plant - is miraculous in reducing peeling and even preventing the burn from getting to the blister stage. The bottled stuff sometimes has some dye or preservative that bothered me a little.
Gosh, girl, please tell me no pantyhose are required tomorrow! Yikes! A long-ish, loose skirt will be best. Bending your knees while wearing most kinds of pants (jeans...argh!!) was the most painful aspect I remember.
Can ya' tell I've done what you did before? Worse, I was in the military, it was all over my body, and I had to wear coveralls and slide underneath vehicles to fix them....not a pleasant memory.Make sure to rest, drink the H2O, stay out of the sun, and get lots of TLC from your guy!
*Extra-careful, tiny, no-bumping into legs hugs to you!* - 10Der
PS - I love that the auto checker asterisks my abbreviation for refrigerator. Fr*g, fr*g, fr*g, just a place for the food....you'd think! funny. ;-)

Aww thanks 10der...I don't think it's a 2nd degree burn so it shouldn't blister. I got a 2nd degree once when I was a kid. I was wearing sunscreen but the pool I was swimming in had massive amounts of chemicals, enough to strip the SS right off my body and eat holes in my swimming suit!!
Nope, no pantyhose tomorrow!! I have a nice long skirt to cover the burn and my hairy legs!! I just hope I can shave by next weekend because we're having an engagement party for us.
This is the end of the thread.
