GYN question

Posted by CareBear04 on July 30, 2005, at 7:37:10

ladies-- i have a question.
i recently was referred to an internal medicine doctor i really like a lot. she is really young and relates well to me, and i feel like she could almost be a friend if she weren't my dr.
i went for my first visit this week, and the nurse asked if i had a GYN, or if i wanted this dr to do my pap smears. i was taken aback because although i've known family med drs to do pap smears, i haven't heard of IM drs doing them. i put it off, but they want me to come back next month. i don't know if i would feel comfortable going to this dr for everything medical when she's going to see me in such a... compromising position. i know we all have to go through it as women, but i don't know... i see the merits of having one dr take care of everything, but i'd almost rather split it up. but i think i'm just being a baby. i've only had one pap smear in my life, and i was heavily sedated for it. i think maybe i just need to get used to it? what do you all think? thanks.

The recommendation from the health board is that women get pap smears done every year. They aren't the most comfortable thing but these doctors deal with this daily and there is nothing for you to worry about. I used to freak out but they're no big deal now.

Although I've never heard of IMs doing paps, if you feel comfortable with her, I'd explain your fear (while clothed) and she should be able to calm your nerves and make it less tramatic for you.

If you feel really comfortable with this doctor, let her do it all, IMO. I think it is much easier to relax (which is important for PAP tests) with someone you have seen several times and relate well with.

Best wishes.

thank you both for your replies. i think i will see this dr, though i feel shy even explaining that i'm embarrassed about the exam. i feel like i should be up to this. i'm close to starting med school, for goodness sakes! thanks again. cb
