Posted by iforgotmypassword on June 28, 2005, at 15:49:54

ive been vegetarian for 6-7 years and vegan 1-1.5. i'm always told that i have low B12, but whenever we treat it with the shots/pills i don't notice a difference. is there any other way being vegetarian could cause depression?

Lack of intake of certain animal fats including long-chain omega-3s can impair the brain's myelnation process.

If you are not getting the right varieties of amino acids from your protein it might. You could try a protein shake made from rice. You need a wide variety of foods that contain some protein. I've seen people do it and be very well. It helps to be a good cook, lots of small dishes.

Lack of iron. Lack of Protein (low ferratin - sp?).
Some people don't respond to B12 pills but you say you have had the shots. I would have your iron and ferratin measured.

i think it may have a huge impact on mood. Ive been vegetarian for a really long time and I notice when Im not eating well, as in protein etc my mood is really affected. And during the worst bout I was deficient in everything.
I became a vegetarian BEFORE getting depressed so I wonder? Did you get it after as well?

Maybe shots / pills don't give you the B12 in a form your body is well able to absorb. My officemate is vegan and he makes special effort to drink those energy drinks - they have B12 in them. He tries to drink 1-2 of them per day and has no problem with B12 deficiency - that may be worth a try.
