Can anyone tell me if sodium lauryl sulfate contains sulfa. I see the word in there but is it the same thing?

Hi Spriggy,
Not sure, but here is a site with links. It looks like something that can cause skin irritation or allergy.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-01,GGLD:en&oi=defmore&q=define:sodium+lauryl+sulfateThis one gives info about ingredients
(Sodium Cetyl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate) Surfactant, detergent, emulsifier. Found in shampoos, creams, lotions, bath products, and dentifrices. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a combination of lauryl alcohol and mineral sodium sulfate followed by neutralisation with sodium carbonate. Grease-cutting ability may produce dry skin. Generally non-toxic when used externally. Sodium Sulfate is mined around turquoise and has the appearance of limestone. Lauryl Alcohol is derived from coconut oil.

Hope this helps.

By "sulfa", I'm assuming you mean the sulfa drugs, antimicrobials? Those are sulfonamides. They're a class of older antimicrobials, still used because they're more effective than many newer drugs for certain kinds of bacterial infections, especially kidney and urinary tract infections.
Sulfates are different. They're some kind of chemistry thing -- sorry I can't tell you more than that.
And isn't it funny? I know [x] amount about the drugs, and [x-3y] about chemistry? I just realized how lame that last part sounds, but I never took chemistry, and the chemistry book a friend of mine sent me never made it here...
This is the end of the thread.
