Tylenol 3 or Hydrocodone??

Posted by Spriggy on May 21, 2005, at 17:56:47

My dr. gave me a prescription for Hydrocodone (for my joint pain) but I have an old bottle of Tylenol 3's that I just found.

Are they similar? If they are the same (or similar) I'll just use this bottle and not spend the extra money.

Thanks.

How old is old? Remember, some drugs lose their potency as time goes on. I myself have found this to be true especially for pain relievers like this. They do not work as well when they get old.

Well, the bottle says it is "expired" as of March of 2004, so we are talking over a year old.

I'll call the pharmacist and see what he thinks. Maybe I can just take one a half or something.

(yeah.. I'm cheap) LOL

I don't think they're similar, because I don't metabolize codeine to morphine very efficiently.

If the T3's work for you, hold off on filling the other stuff. If they don't, you have an option.

Nissy,

T-3 and Hydrocodone are NOT the same medicine, nor are they of equivalent strentgh. T-3 get metabolized into about 10% of the oral Morhphine "equidose". That means 30mg of T-3 would equate to about 3mg of Morhine taken orally (which is,well, not the best dose).
Hydrocodone (generally name brand of Lorcet or Vicodin range from 5-10mg of the drug with anywhere between 325-660 of ACP). It's the ACP that is REALLY the problem, because it is in a lot of OTC meds, and the max single dose is 1000mg and the max daily limit is 4000mg. Tylenol (ACP) can cause SERIOUS liver damage, and I would discourage you from taking any more of it that you have to. From my experience (to answer your question) 3 30mg T-3 pills are "roughly" eqvialent to one 10mg/660ACP pill for pain relief. There will be much debate on the qualitive eqivalent of opiate and opiod meds, but the literature to support my claim is readily available (try searching the Merck Manual for a comparison chart). As always, your milage may vary. BTW, this post in no way condones using any medication except as prescribed by one's Dr. Hope this helps.
