High Blood Pressure--Avapro? Comments Ed?

Posted by MidnightBlue on April 27, 2005, at 19:47:21

Has anyone here tried Avapro for high blood pressure? My pressure today was 170/100 and they really want me to try something. The nurse tried to tell me it was probably higher than that, but I was almost crying she left the cuff on so long and it was extremely tight.

The doctor gave me a sample of Avapro 150mg and wants me to cut it in half. Only thing is I noticed in the insert it says it can cause mouth ulcers, and I can't imagine cutting it in half would help that.

I so do NOT want to take this medicine!

Hi!

Irbesartan is usually well tolerated. I'd take it if I were you!

Ed.

Ed,

You are such a sweetie! Interrupting your studying to answer my question. Maybe I'll try to take one tomorrow or Saturday morning. Is it really okay to break them in half? That would make it 75 mg --he only had samples for 150 mg but I am so sensitive to meds that was why he said to half it.

Best wishes on your tests. I will be praying for you. You are such a vital source of information. Thank you again.

Hi!

The tablets are film coated and unscored. They are probably not intended to be split in half. You would probably be ok starting at 150mg, side effects are usually mild. A few people get dizzy.

'In placebo-controlled trials in patients with hypertension, the overall incidence of adverse events did not differ between the irbesartan (56.2%) and the placebo groups (56.5%). Discontinuation due to any clinical or laboratory adverse event was less frequent for irbesartan-treated patients (3.3%) than for placebo-treated patients (4.5%). The incidence of adverse events was not related to dose (in the recommended dose range), gender, age, race, or duration of treatment.'

Regards,
Ed.

Okay, that does it I'm not taking it. I thought it was film coated. I do NOT need a mouth full of ulcers! The doc really doesn't want me taking 150 at first because I tried another med for blood pressure about 18 months ago(sorry can't remember name started with Ben something?) and I got VERY dizzy on it and my pressure went way down after a hot shower. I suspect my pressure is all over the place. It is always higher in his office than my other doctor's.

I already have trouble walking (for real) because of arthritis, etc. I've even had to start using a cane so I sure don't need to get dizzy.

Besides I have something really important coming up in two weeks and I can't feel terrible for that. I may call next week and ask if they have any 75mg samples. But I doubt it. Yeah--the USA and those drug reps! I hate meds!

Thanks Ed--keep studying!

Okay, I filled a rx for Avapro 75mg. I REALLY need to take this probably since my last pressure was 180/100. But I am scared to death to take it! The pharmacist said take it at night, the doctor didn't know what he was talking about. The doctor said take it in the morning (no explaination why, but he was firm about that). The pharmacist said Bextra (yeah I still have some) would make it not work. All the books I have read have said to be sure someone is with you when you first take one because your airways might swell up so you can't breath or talk. Well, that is easier said than done. In the morning I am alone. At night, my husband is home, but what am I supposed to do take it and go to sleep? Not possible. I'll be waiting to die.

My stress level right now is just about through the roof. I just started accupuncture for my knees. (it was free--a clinical trial) I need to be on psych meds, but it looks like it will be weeks or months before that happens.

Any suggestions? I've had reactions to drugs before so this is almost a PTSD type thing with me.
