My father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 30. I'm not far from that age and they just recently told me I have it (they are testing me to see what type).
I always thought my father's diabetes was self induced. He drank about 12 cans of coke a day, never ate well or exercised.
I am the opposite. I eat healthy, run about 3 miles a day, drink a lot of water, take vitamins, etc.. and yet here I am being told i have it too.
It seems so unfair (not that life is fair or anything).
I guess I'm in shock. I don't understand. I did all the "right" things to avoid it and here it is knocking at my door.
Right now, I'm not too out of control.
My blood level when waking up is a little low around 70, then I eat and it can go around 150. A few times it hit 250 but that was the highest. The lowest was 66.
I generally linger between 140-170- which I know is a bit "high" but it might be able to be managed with my diet.. i'm thinking.
Any other diabetics here??
What were your symptoms for your diagnosis?
I have lost about 17 pounds since Christmas. I have had chronic yeast infections, stay fatigued, extreme anxiety, and also feel "flu like" a lot. I've ran fevers off and on since Christmas as well.
I just generally feel like I've been ran over with a Mac truck.. other than that, life is good. LOL

I'm diabetic. Have been for about a year. Two maybe. Run over by a mac truck sounds right. Yeast infections sound right. Fever doesn't. I'd look into other possibilities for that.
I ate a plate of pasta last night. Not a big plate. A regular sized plate. Then pretty much passed out and woke up feeling awful. Anxious and hung over. I haven't eaten pasta lately, and this experience is sort of hitting me over the head with the reality of this disease. I am never going to be the same again. I am never going to be able to sit down to a regular old dinner of meatballs and spaghetti again.
I'm sorry I can't be more positive for you, but the truth is that diabetes sucks. There's no two ways around that. Funny thing is that while my mother is paying big time now she's in her seventies, she merrily ignored her diabetes and just upped her insulin when necessary while I was growing up. And she didn't appear to feel anywhere near as bad as I'm feeling.
Sorry, you caught me on a bad night.

Dinah,
We have a lot in common. My father does the same thing (he is in his 40's and dying- likely in part due to diabetes). My dad thought managaing his diabetes meant that after he ate a box of pop tarts, he would just take more insulin. and VOILA! He would be fine.
His diabetes (along with smoking 3 packs a day) has caused his immune system to basically just malfunction. He has hepatitis C, emphysema, degenerative disc disease, and heart disease. You add all those up and it equals a very young death.
I, can't understand why this happened to me, other than genetics (thanks God!).But I will just do the best I can and avoid those pasta with meatballs. Yikes!
I understand where you are coming from. It really does suck- I don't let me kids' say that word but sometimes, it's just sooo appropriate. Like now.
We can be mad diabetics together. How about that? LOL

Oddly enough, now that I've been testing my blood sugars, they look pretty good. There's no excuse for my feeling so awful.
Sigh.
