A fungus among us -- or among my toes

Posted by Sarah T. on March 19, 2005, at 4:21:52

A few years ago, a dermatologist told me that if you have a fungal infection, it will itch. He said that's how you can be sure you have a fungal infection. Well, what does he know? I've definitely had fungal infections that don't itch, or that hardly itch at all. Right now, I have a nasty fungal infection on my feet. It rarely itches, but I'm absolutely certain it's a fungus. I tried Lamisil and one other over-the-counter anti-fungal topical ointment, and both Lamisil and the other one made me sick. I am super-sensitive to most medications, but I never imagined that I'd have a bad reaction to a topical medicine. I didn't ingest the cream; I applied it to my feet, but there must have been a significant amount of systemic absorption. In a few months, I'll be able to wear sandals and my feet won't sweat so much. Until then, do any of you have any suggestions on how to deal with this problem? I actually had some nausea and general sick feeling/malaise from the Lamisil cream. I'm grateful that I wasn't rx'd the Lamisil pills!

Welcome to the club.

When I was 17, I dropped something on my big toe- the nail cracked, a fungus came in and here I am 10 years later, and it's STILl there.

I did the Lamisil pills for a while until they showed me a picture of what a baby would look like if it were born while on that med. It freaked me out enough to keep the fungus and ditch the meds.

LOL..

I just found I'm a diabetic and apparantly this fungus issue can be related to that.. So maybe get that ruled out for you.

Thank you, Spriggy. I think I just need to move to a nice warm part of the country where I can wear sandals all year 'round so my feet can get some air! Thanks, also, for suggesting that I get checked for diabetes. I actually did buy some Clinisticks. Originally, I bought them to test my cat's urine, but recently I tried them several times to test my own urine because I've been urinating a lot and I've been thirsty. So far, the tests have been normal. I should have them done in a doctor's office as well, and also get my blood glucose tested.

Somebody told me that Vicks Vaporub applied to the feet every night over several months can cure foot fungus. I'm astonished! Has anyone ever heard of that? I wonder which ingredient would be the antifungal? Would it be camphor?
