My son was two yrs old and was diagnosed w/ idiopathic epilepsy at age 8 months and put on Topamax. He died 12-31-2004 of a major overdose after the meds where increased. I would really like to know what you would recomend for a two year old with idiopathic epilepsy, and not specific seizure type and no specific triggers. We onkly tried carbotrol and tegretol as other meds and nothing else. Of course those two did nothing to help. Just make things worse.

Melinda,
I just read your post and I am so very sorry! I don't know how you feel, and my heart goes out for you. What was his name? Why was he put on topamax, and not something else? There are other medications then the two he tried before. Let us help you.-L

His name is Devin T Simon. He wasnt on any other meds and we had only tried carbatrol, and tegretol. He was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. at the age of 8 months and was emmediately put on topamax 15mg 2x daily. It increesed over 15 months to 200mg 2xdaily. In the research that i have done found out that topamax is NOT approved for use in children under the age of 2. He had the signs from the time he started until the day he passed but the doc said that the symptoms would go away.

i would not recomend the use of topamsx. I recomend dilantin as a main treatment and introduce topamax at age two no more then 3mg per kg. As directed by the manufacturer. I am not a neuroligist by have done the resarch and have found that topamax is not to be used in children under the age of two and the maximum dose for an adult male 160 lbs. is 400 mg a day

I am amazed at that! I do know that most doctors do not go over 400mg unless the circomstance is unusual. Some people do need a higher dosage, but it seems to me a baby wouldn't need as much as your son was taking. How are you coping with things? Have you been going to any type of therapist for counseling, or thought about it? Do you have family near for support?
I hope I can find this thread....because I had feeling it would be re-directed. I will be thinking of you and your family. Please post back when you can. -L

I am doing well. As well as i can do just getting facts and research gathered for the lawyers. I am learning alot about this disease and treatment. I dont see a councelor but i am so igrosed in making this pediatric neurologist pay for the murder of my son. I just hope that there is some one person out there that sees this and keeps this from happening to there child. I just want the world to know this med. will kill an infant or toddler at these doses and if your child is on that much topamax you need to see someone else as soon as possible. Get a second and third oppinion if you have to and dont trust someones word that who you see is the best. It may not be true. I hope that one day i can help others to earn more about there disease and there treatment to give them the best care. 83% of epileptics do not get addiquit care. I find that to be a shame.

I am so sorry to hear about your son. I hope that you can get some comfort by taking legal action against the doctor. He should have known better.

I am so sorry for your loss. My daughter was prescribed Top in Nov. In Dec. she started having suicidal thoughts but told noone.(according to her note) In January she left this world by her own hand. This is a side effect of topomax. It is very dangerous for some. Your sons doc screwed up and so did my daughters to a lesser degree. Was his doctor involved in research? Could he have been experimenting, or did he just screw up?

I am so sorry for your loss. My youngest is 3. No drugs, thank god.
From what I understand Topamax, first and formost is for the treatment of Migraines? I'm sure someone can back me up here. I believe there's a www.topamax.com site as well with a good deal of information on the drug and it's side effects. Now, I'm 40, and I'm on the drug for it's side-effects. I've taken it before for the same reason. To lose the weight gained from other meds. First zyprexa 40 pounds gained, next Seroquel, 50 pounds gained. I started at 200mg. I cannot imagine anyone prescribing such a high dose for a 2 year old!!!
I know it won't bring your son back, but I'm an eye for and eye type, and I would tear this "doctors" career limb from limb and make as much money in a settlement as possible to use however you see fit.
Personally, I wish I could take on 2 different pharmaceutical companies but I wouldn't stand a chance. I think you would.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss.
At least he doesn't have to suffer anymore.
This is the end of the thread.
