Those small dark blotches that sometimes form on the ceiling above the shower or on the shower curtain -- are these toxic? Is this the dreaded "black mold"? Am I going to suffer ongoing consequences to my cognition of psychological health? Or is this type of mold nontoxic?

I have not heard that that mold would be a dangerous type. Some people have mild allergies towards molds (I do), just like you would to pollen.

Yes the black mold is dangerous. Sometimes it gets behind walls, etc, and professionals have to get rid of it. Fondly, Phillipa

Black mold is the most dangerous of all molds. It can cause all sorts of problems physically and neurologically.
Get rid of it as soon as possible.

I recently purchased a house and when the inspector came to look at it, I asked him about black mold. He said that all mold is black mold but there is only one strain that is dangerous.
This strain usually hides behind walls and it's very hard to detect. The mold that forms due to water from your shower is harmless, just be sure to clean it with a strong cleanser. Also, be sure that your shower insert is sealed to the wall at the top. Dripping water behind the shower insert can also cause hidden mold in the wall.
I was one of the unfortunate ones that renovated my bathroom and found the wall behind the tub was covered in mold. I feel better knowing that we removed the wall, tub and insert. The mold should be gone for now.
This is the end of the thread.
