Gotta gain some weight -- how?

Posted by Racer on September 30, 2004, at 12:36:33

I know, this is something to discuss with the doctor. I will. Meantime, though, I get very sick and miserable if I eat too much or too often. Still, I have to do something.

I do have a pantry full of good tasting junk food snacks -- thanks to my mother (cookies and some coffee cake in the freezer) and my husband (potato chips, peanut butter M&Ms, and ice cream bars) -- but I don't want to unbalance my diet any more than it already is. Would adding something like V-8 help? Or maybe some peanuts? Or would it be better to add a piece of toast between breakfast and lunch?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? (And keep in mind that I may not be able to follow through on this. I know I need to, but that's a whole 'nother animal.)

Thanks.

I'll take some of your weight, if you'll take a couple of cup sizes from my breasts. How's that for a trade? :-D How about you take two cup sizes, and I take, say, 40 pounds from you?

I'll fax 'em over, you can fax 'em back...

Ouch! Faxing breasts...would that be what a mammogram feels like? And speaking of, considering this is Oct. which is Breast Ca Awareness month, I suppose I really should go in for my first smoosh.

It isn't any sort of big deal. Yes, it's not a lot of fun to stand there with your shirt off in front of a big machine, with someone you wouldn't want to see naked in return trying to make a pancake out of your boob. BUT it doesn't hurt, it's not all that uncomfortable -- besides the part about being topless in front of a stranger who doesn't have an MD after his or her name -- but it isn't something to be frightened of.

Did we talk about this? I had my first one last year, after a doctor found a lump. Then the second doctor found the same lump -- and another. The mammogram was just suspicious enough to require a follow up ultrasound -- which was actually worse for me than the mammogram -- and then the surgeon scared the you-know-what out of me by saying he thought I needed to do it all again in three months -- because, although the lumps already found didn't worry him, he found yet another that did!

That was scary.

Getting a mammogram is not scary. It's a rite of passage, like your first pelvic. Only not nearly so uncomfortable.

There. Now you won't worry so much, right?

I couldn't gain weight until recently, so understand how frustrating it is!! Zinc and B6 are important for regulating hunger, and a good multi vitamin/mineral like thorne's 'extra nutrients' might be worth a try. If the gut's inflamed, you won't feel hungry, so fish oils can be good, and also stomach acid and digestive enzymes, can help to reduce the discomfort after eating.

I had a milk allergy that caused me to lose weight, but if you're ok with dairy, thorne also make a whey protein concentrate, that is good for weight gain too.

Good luck,

Ray

Oh, that sounds like a perfect deal. My husband would LOVE the extra two cup sizes.

We got a deal!

hey racer! i've never seen this post before, but i definitely relate to your problem. did you ever find a way to put on weight? i'm really underweight right now and having the kind of medical complications you see with anorexia. i've always been small, so i need only 10 of 15 pounds to get back to my baseline weight, but each pound is a struggle. until about a week ago, i was eating as much as possible and much more than previously, and i was still losing weight. once i reached the lowest point, i was able to gain several pounds in a few days. since then, though, i've been gaining a small amount and then losing more. i think my body is adjusting to and needing larger amounts of intake faster than i can increase my intake. during the two or so months that i was sick and losing weight, i think a lot of body processes shut down to keep me alive and keep the most vital processes going. now i think i need to repay the debt to those organs and systems, so food and fluids are disappearing mysteriously. in the hospital, around the clock fluids, minerals, and nutrition couldn't keep up with the losses. please, if you found a solution, please let me know!!!! thanks! cb

p.s.-- i'm envious! thin, but with good size breasts? i have the thin part down, but i've always been flat as anything. i have the figure of a little boy, and i would give almost anything for [natural] breast growth.

muscle is heavier than fat, even better - new muscle metabolises quickly. I was underweight and am now baseline thanks to working out, supplementing a 50:50 blend of carbo's and protien and much motivation. Sure i gained a little layer of fat over my abs, but i plan to stick to this muscle building for a while. Seeing how much ive grown and developed... and how fast thanks to the 50:50 blend. i also think a good multivitamin/mineral/antioxidant daily helps. If your on many drugs try to find a vita supplement without any herbs, i feel they get in the way (took effexor and an old multi with herbs once.... vomited within 30 mins.)
If u want more advice on this topic just post back.
