On Friday afternoon, I started "leaking" out of my right eye. It was constant and within a few minutes had absolutely no make up on. I looked hideously lobsided. It continued for most of Saturday, nothing on Sunday, and has been there all morning just not as heavy. My eye doesn't itch, scratch or burn. It just leaks and leaks and leaks. It is the weirdest thing and I have absolutely no explanation. I can't blame everything that happens to me on side effects. Can I?

Are you leaking tears or is it something else? No irritation in your eye that it is trying to flush out by itself?

I guess it must be tears as it's quite clear and appears to be pouring from my tear duct. There was no irritation that I am aware of, however today it has felt like something is in my eye. My vision is a bit cloudy.
So strange and out of the blue

If it doesn't stop on its own you might want an opthamologist to take a look at it. Don't you hate it when our bodies play tricks on us?

> SabrinaThe condition is called epiphora. Considering all you have said, the most likely cause is a blocked duct at the base of your eye. You should see a doctor, as your sight is not something to be cavalier about.
You generally are blissfully unaware just how much fluid is produced to keep your eye moist, lubricated, and protected from infection. The fluid routinely produced is called basal flow, and it drains out from your eye socket through a duct near your nose. Those ducts can clog up. A doctor uses a fine wire probe, and reopens the duct, restoring drainage. Voila!
There are other possible causes of epiphora, so you need to see a doctor.

Thank you Larry. My medical insurance is dried up, so when I'm a bit flush again, I will see my doc.
But a wire probe? EEEEEK!

I have had sores in my nose that simply do not heal (Pretty much since starting Effexor). They are painful, scabby and bleed often. Do you think this could be related?
Furthermore, the tearing continued last night but has stopped again today. Is it possible for the tearing to be sporadic like this if there is a blockage? I would imagine the tearing to be continuous.
Thanks for you help. (You really are a walking encyclopedia)

Yes, quite possibly. The drainage from the eye passes through the nasal cavity on its way to the back of the throat. The blockage could be in the nose itself, as the duct has two ends.
Effexor is known to produce some rather rare disturbances in the skin. It also is thought to produce some inflammatory eye problems, but you don't think there's inflammation, right? We're getting into some topics that are well beyond internet interpretation. A doctor needs to physically examine you.

More reason to see a doctor.

The metal tool used to unblock the duct (if that's the problem) will probably not hurt at all. I'm not saying it's not weird and uncomfortable, but it ought not to hurt. Babies are often born with their tear ducts blocked. There's a lot of debris floating around in the amniotic fluid, and it's only once the baby is out in the air that the problem really exists.
Developing the problem as an adult could just be a nuisance. Or, it could be a sign of something more ominous.
You can probably wait until you're seeing a doctor for another reason, but promise me that if there is the slightest redness or irritation in the eye, you go straight away to the doctor. Okay?
