sore throat - am I OK?

Posted by Miss Honeychurch on June 10, 2004, at 12:07:08

So I've had a sore throat for a week now. I am trying not to panic and start scaring myself to death surfing the web for what this could be symptomatic of. I'm a hypochondriac in remission!

But I've had a cold now for a week and they NEVER last this long. Is this normal? I'm trying not to think that this could be indicative of something more serious.

Could be seasonal allergies - post nasal drip gives you a sore throat. Or a leftover from a cold. For me, that's the last part of me to get better. Seems I always have some nastiness going on at the back of my throat, but it's never been anything serious or that required treatment.

Thanks, partlycloudy. The postnasal drip makes sense since I ma having allergies on top of the cold. It seems such a trivial thing to get concerned about, but for a hypochondriac, who is too in tune to every little thing that is going on with her body, it becomes monumental.

Your logic helps me!

Years back, my doctor was trying to figure out my "cold" that went on for more than a month, complete with a low fever, etc. We were both frustrated beyond belief, I think, and I was starting to get frightened that she was going to put it down to hypochonriasis. (Thankfully, she was GREAT, and paid attention to my distress even if she couldn't find a physical cause to it.)

So, she started over -- has anything changed in your life? What is new? Any new soaps, shampoos, cleaning supplies, etc? I said, "well, the only thing I can think of that's new is the new cat litter because we just got a kitten."

Dead silence.

"Let me look at your throat again. Now your eyes. Mmmhmmm... You don't have a cold, you're allergic to cats!"

(Still have that cat, too, 15 years later.)

The point of that is yes, allergies can look like colds -- even to fevers.

Could be a yeast infection too- if your immune system is stressed naturally occuring yeast in the oral mucusa can cause "thrush" or oral candidiasis.

Worth ruling out if you have a sort of burning sensation in your throat.

Do you have your tonsils? I have mine, and sometimes they get infected.

Thanks all for the advice. I do still have my tonsils. The throat is cleared up now but I do have wierd days where it will be sore for no reason and fine the next.

I'm thinking it is just stress. Stress always manifests itself physically for me.
