TMJ treatments

Posted by rainyday on April 22, 2004, at 14:43:21

I have been having wicked TMJ for years, but it has worsened considerably since I have been on medications for BP2.

What on earth do people do for this?? My temples hurt, my ears feel all plugged up (and I know they aren't), and I feel like I've taken a few to the jaw.

I wear a nightguard called an NTI which at least keeps me from clenching my jaw during the night, but I would look pretty goofy wearing it during the day (plus I don't think I could talk).

Hi,
I have battled TMJ forever. Have used every appliance there is, and none have worked...I just tend to chew or clench down on them, which makes the pain worse. The only thing that has worked for me is relaxation exercises focused directly on those muscles. I will do these mostly before bed, and will imagine all kinds of things, such as cool waters running through the muscles, and then applying warm heat. Anyway, I just kind of made up whatever helped me to get the muscles to relax. I do a lot of self-massage and use a little hand massager directly on the muscles too.

Hope this helps a little!

Thank you. Relaxation exercises sound sensible! Thanks for your response.
