Boy, I'll probably get in trouble with this Post, but we both read the book and are now watching Disputing the DaVinci Code. I say the Last Supper does look like that of a woman next to Jesus. We have discussed this book with a lot of people on the beach at Emerald Isle. The crowd is very educated and mostly from Raleigh, NC. A lot of them tend to believe that the book could be true. One lady refused to read it. My husband and I have had many disputes over the content. He was raised a Christian, and I was raised without religion. I have a very scientific mind and find myself always questioning things and want to see proof. What do you think. You all have such strong beliefs. I truly envy your Faith. Y'know, I was one of those "refuse-to-read-it's" until recently... I've heard all the uproar, and I've heard all the refutals to it...
But I'm thinking it's just time that I read it for myself, rather than discussing it from a position of ignorance!
I've heard it's a wild read, and a page-turner... I believe that it's fiction (at least, that's the author's stated intent), but most authors seem to be pushing some sort of agenda...
Cerainly the "Left Behind" authors believe the premise of their books, and many Evangelical Christians believe that premise (about the Rapture being true).
For the record, I disagree with the Rapture folks (though I USED to agree with them). I believe you have to stretch a whole lotta Scriptures in order to support that premise...
But many things have been stretched out of distortion regarding God, Jesus, and the Bible...
If a novel gets folks talking and wondering, and asking God for His perspective, then it's a good thing... I think it's always a good thing to dig deeply into why we believe what we believe...

Dena, Great points! Especially the one about people talking about God. Actually we saw more people on the beach last year reading the book than you can imagine. We always walked up to them and asked them "So how do you like the book and what do you think?". Many a good conversation resulted from this. Everyone seemed to want to discuss the issue of whether it could be true or not. There is a show on Cable that we taped that is called "Beyond The DaVinci Code", which is a good discussion of what it fact and what is nonfiction. It's on the History Channel. Fondly, Phillipa

Sadly, we got rid of cable, in anticipation of our cross-country move...
My kids were devouring far too much television for their own good...
So we got rid of it. I think our new home will have satellite - perhaps we can pick and choose which stations we want to come into the house... I don't know much about satellite systems.
I DO know that I miss having cable for my computer! Argh!
Anyway, we do miss some of the more educational programs... but I don't miss having my kids mimick what they saw on what passed for "children's programming"... why are all the parents on those shows complete idiots, and why is it "cool" for kids to disrespect their parents?

I read it - and did some searching to try to determine fact/fiction.
The book itself is fiction, but many, many of the things it draws on are fact. Exactly where it deviates from fact is what is being debated.
Jesus married? It would be must unusual if he wasn't. And it seems highly likely that if he wasn't it would have been mentioned in the gospels.
The Gnostic gospels do exist and the quotes from them are accurate. Opus Dei does exist, though they insist they are misrepresented. The Knights Templar did exist.
I just bought "Holy blood, Holy grail" one of the sources (I hear) of the book.

I've listened to over half of it now. Some of it is outside of my realm of knowledge and so I can't say for certain. I looked at a few books that say it's based on faulty history, but I have no knowledge base.
But now it's getting into the Gnostic Gospels and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The things I've read about them have hardly been written by devout Christians. Most of them have been written by skeptics. Yet nothing I've read supports the degree of claims made in this book.
Which makes the books frequent claims that this or that is widely accepted as fact a bit hard to swallow.
I guess it just seems like a lot of spin put on a very little amount of real information. And not enough clarification on what is conjecture and what fact. Not to mention the fact that the books seem to assert that the Gospels are actually written down at the time of Christ by his immediate followers, when most scholars place the earliest Gospel as written several years after the death of Christ. And placing equal weight on all Gospels. While there seems to be some agreement that there is some legitimate reason that some of the Gnostic Gospels weren't included in the final version of the Bible.
The same with the Council of Nicea. Some fact, some conjecture and not much clarification on which is which.
And if the ending of the book is what it appears to be, I'd have to question whether the supposed Grail would be any threat at all to the Church.
