Healing depression and anxiety

Posted by OneGarden on January 21, 2004, at 15:50:31

I wouldn't say I've been "healed," but I'd say that my depression and anxiety have greatly improved. This improvement resulted from a decision I made to be more true to my ethical convictions and to my belief in God. My depression and anxiety lessened as I became truer to myself. I have always been disturbed by the suffering of animals in slaughterhouses, so I became a Vegan. I have always believed in the presence of God (not a personal God) though I rarely talked about it, and I believed in respecting all beliefs and individuals that do not violate the rights of others, so I researched churches and found the Unitarian Universalist church. Their values and principles are like my own. In the church, I found a support group of like-minded individuals who respect the rights and individuality of others, and it provided an opportunity to increase my spiritual understanding. I also started giving of myself more. I have noticed that whenever I am depressed or anxious, if I give of myself, even in a small way, I feel better--not completely, not "healed"--but better.
I am not cured of depression or anxiety, but I am also not crippled by them like I used to be.
The decision to become truer to my convictions has helped me immensely, psychologically, socially and spiritually.
