I'm a practicing Buddhist and have been on anti-depressants for about 2 1/2 years. I've never really been able to decide where I stand with anti-depressants philosophically. I whole-heartedly believe that the Buddhist path will eventually lead me away from depression forever.. but in the mean time...I've not decided if I'm compromising my beliefs, taking the easy road..
Thoughts?

In reply to Buddhism and Anti-depressants -- some thoughts?, posted by asha on December 22, 2003, at 21:00:31
I know it can get totally confusing but if the meds work for you certainly there must be compassion for the need for meds. I am sure other people need vitamins....etc.
The whole thing about Buddhism is compassion....so why would anyone judge you. I think it's magnificent that meds work...I am in awe of chemical products that can give one a liveable life. I think the Dali Lama is working on the science of the body and brain with some brilliant scientists currently. There are books out that talk about the research. I am a buddhist as well and I would never say you shouldn't use meds for your well being. I think you are doing the right thing to make your life better. I really don't know if I have answered your question at all. But I support you in doing what you need to do.
