OK, so I went to the doctor's today, GP, and as she was taking my BP, the nurse started asking me how I got to be so thin! I told her I had an eating disorder, hoping to shut her up, AND SHE STARTED ASKING ME FOR DIETING TIPS!!!
Cross my heart, she started asking me what to eat to get to be thin like me. I told her the basics of healthy eating, as told to me by my N: sensible, well balanced meals based on the food pyramid -- and suggested that she get herself some therapy for her body image problem, without suggesting that it was really, really stupid to be asking an anorexic for dieting tips!
Now that I'm back from the Twilight Zone, by the way, the rest of the exam went well -- he redid the EKG that came back with huge red ABNORMAL stamps all over it, and explained what it said: it actually is normal, it's just that the electrodes were so close to my heart -- because I'm still thin -- that the computer that was reading it saw it as abnormal. Having it read by a real person -- id est: the doctor -- who can interpret it makes a difference. Not to mention having a doctor who doesn't just dismiss you as unworthy of his notice once he hears the words Anorexia Nervosa.
Wouldn't it be nice if Health Care Professionals all had some clue about what a difference it makes to us if they treat us humanely?

Holey moley, batwoman! I guess they don't do chart reviews in your GP's office, or this sterling specimen must have been on a pee break at the time.
I'm glad your EKG is good - I know it was a big worry for you!

wow, i'm sorry about your experience! people often seem to think that it's okay to comment about a person being too thin while it's not ok to say something about being fat. i get comments a lot, and it makes me really uncomfortable. still, i've never been asked for dieting tips, and that it came from a healthcare professional is even harder to believe. i always thought that they're taught to look at thinness with disapproval, even when they themselves are sticks. by coincidence or not, almost every female psychiatrist or psych resident i've seen in unhealthily thin by standards or "normal." go figure...

Maybe it wasn't a nurse, but a medical assistant? They only receive a few months of training, but still no excuse.
Asking an anorexic for diet tips is a new low in health care.
