"Atomised" by Michel Houellebecq is a very interesting and extremely funny book. He comes at everything from a really strange angle. I dunno if he's exactly a reactionary. There's noone at all like him. But not for everyone's taste. He is most un-PC.

Oh yeah, I read that too.
I can't remember much about it, except it was set in France and er, was pretty rude??
For some reason the thing that most sticks out in my mind about it was the fact that the main charactor (I can't remember his name, it might not have even been the main charactor) ate too much because he had low self esteem. It seemed to ring true with me at least.
You read any of Douglas Coupland's stuff? I quite like his books.
Kind regards
Meri

Hi Merri
It *was* sexually explicit, but the main thing for me was the quality of the humour. Nihilistic and unhealthy, maybe. He has such a funny take on the 60s, you might remember the main character (Bruno?) who decides he's too ugly (and poor?) to be a hippy, so decides to be a rightwinger instead so he can get some sex. I think the writer hates a lot of the modern world; definately a misanthrope. I enhoyed it immensely.
I've never read anything by Douglas Coupland.
I really loved "All Quiet on the Western Front" when I read it recently. Now that I think of it I only ever read 2 types of books, the really tragic ones, like history books or the scornful amusing ones. And now I will go back to the Saturday papers and see what's new in the Middle East.
