audio book for my car-sort of dark-trigger??

Posted by sleepygirl on April 15, 2006, at 22:00:56

it's called "A Long Way Down" about 4 people who meet atop a building on New Year's Eve each having the intention to end their lives by jumping off it. I just started it, and each character is explaining their own individual reasons for opting for suicide, problems in their lives, etc. They all would have jumped if it were not for the fact that they meet up with one another on this roof.
I was wondering why I chose the book, thinking perhaps I was indulging in pessimism, negativity, am I too depressed? but I think I just needed to here a story about how awful other people can feel 'cause somehow that's comforting??? go figure.
It remains to be seen for me however how this book shall unfold. We shall see.

I read a lot of very dark stories, and I think of them as expressing a macabre fascination with "bad things" that I'll admit to and can identify with. For me, it's only ever been the stuff of my nightmares. I think these books let me release that fascination without having me act upon it. So they're a good thing.

Hi Sleepy,

Yeah I read this a while back and some of it was really uncomfortable because it cut close to the bone. I think Jay had a brief thread about it way back. I chose it because I liked all his other books, I knew what this was about and still chose to read it. It actually led at a really healthy and meaningful discussion with a work mate who'd read it about depression and related stuff and a friend she was worried about.

I needed to put it down and just sit with some of the stuff for a while. Trust your own judgement in whether to go on listening.

And above all take care of yourself.
