What's everyone reading?

Posted by Angela2 on August 27, 2005, at 20:40:05

What is everyone reading? I have started "The Ice Queen" I'm not sure who it's by, but if yoyu click on the link it will tell you. So far it's pretty good. By the Way, has anyone noticed how books, and when I say books I mean fictional books, are like looking into a twisted reality? It's like watching TV. Like Full House or Degrassi. It isn't real. That kind of bothers me. I'd like to read something where the protagonist has real emotions, logical problems, I dunno. Does anyone know what I mean?

But back to my list of books, I am reading "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury. I am reading it for the second time. I read it first in high school. It is very eerie. Has anyone else read it?

I also got out a book of HG Wells novels. But I haven't started it yet. I'm not sure if I'm going to. I just keep procrastinating from reading it. But initially I was very interested in reading his stories.

That is all for now. Although before I end this post I must mention that the movie "shopgirl" is coming out in November (I think). It is based on Steve Martin's book which I love. I will probably end up seeing it, although I think I will end up liking the book better.

Depends on what you read, I guess. I've read a number that reflected emotions I recognized. The one book that stands out for me, in terms of emotions I recognized, was a novel about a young woman who was undergoing inpatient treatment for anorexia, called "Life Size" by Jenefer Shute. Some of it was based on the outmoded ideas about anorexia being caused by sexual weirdness -- the whole "oral impregnation" bit, mostly -- but some of the scenes where she is looking at the food on her plate, or freaking out about eating -- those resonated for me. It was also a rather subtle book, because there was not only no Revelatory Breakthrough, but her transition from very sick to nearly ready for discharge was smooth, and almost unnoticeable. I know that it's similar for me, and I hardly notice the changes as they're happening. (Not that I don't still freak out about how enormous I've become. {shrug} Guess if it were easy, everyone would recover, huh?)

And, of course, there are many other books out there with real emotions -- it's just a matter of finding them. Someone here will have other suggestions, I'm sure.

Nearly forgot! Right now, I'm reading "The Body Project," about the changes in the past century or so in American adolescent girls, and the way they experience the world. Quite good, and very educational. Just finished "Chocky" by John Wyndham, which was excellent sci-fi.

Oh, for another emotion book -- "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, or "Lost Boys," by OSC. (Yeah, I like his work.)

That's after "Something Rotten," by the divine Jasper Fforde. Gotta get my hands on "The Big Over Easy" next.

After this, though, gotta read some Assigned Books from my therapist and my nutritionist. First, probably, is "Intuitive Eating," then maybe "Overcoming Overeating" or another that I forget... Poor brain -- just like a sieve...

I just picked up the 4th and last book in the Ender series. I love those books. All of my kids have read them too...

I finished the "Mermaid's Chair" -- it was good. And I just started "Eldest" I wish I had a whole week off by myself just to read and eat. I need to be independently wealth.

After finishing "Jane Eyre" I kind of went into magazine mode briefly.. Who knows why!

Currently reading "Seventy-Two Virgins" by Boris Johnson (who I have the most unexplainable crush on.. Brit politician (opposite of my political leanings), very posh, bumbling british type.. but.. I can't help it!).. Its good.. but kinda messing with ehad slightly as its about suicide bombers in London.

After that I have "Madame Bovery" and "Birds without Wings" by Louis de Bernieres lined up.. Kind of putting off Birds without Wings incase it lets me down!!
Also, desperately waiting for "Kafka on the shore" to be out in paperback.. Wish it owuld hurry up..

Oh, and notcied that Isabel Allende has a new book out.. "Zorro". Looks intriguing, and I really should wait for the paperback..

Going to be having lots more reading time starting a few weeks.. a 90 minute each way commute to work.. Though I will be getting to the tube station early enough in the monring for the freebie newspaper so that will soak up some of it!!

I just finished the first 2 Harry Potter books. A bit behind the times, aren't I? Hopefully will pick up the next 2 in the series tomorrow. Borrowing from a friend. I am really excited about the series- much more than I thought I would be... That Rowling chick can sure spin a yarn! LOL Have a great weekend!

Well ... currently depressed as hell, so reading is difficult (will I get my ability back?). But, these are the ones I've been reading in a multitasking-like state:

"A General Theory of Love," a fascinating look at the biological and psychology basis of emotion. (Can't recall authors. Google it.)

"The Illuminatus! Trilogy," for the second time. (Shea, Wilson.)

Aurelius's "Meditations".

My girlfriend's law papers. Editing those. Fun stuff!

All reading halts tonight, however: Sopranos season primere and, from what I hear, it's a doozy!
