..Dr. Peter D. Kramer's (of "Listening to Prozac" fame) "Against Depression" This book is one that argues for the complete obliteration, like a nuclear warhead hitting it's target, of depression. He calls it like it is...as evil as cancer, aids, etc. He talks of future genetic therapy, why we should be aggressive with the use of psych meds..all sorts of things, as if depression is the absolute, complete, most horrid, sick disgusting thing in existence. I also like how he takes the romance, the drama, out of the so-called 'creative' side of depression, and explains plainly that you can't be creative if you have been hiding from the world in pain, underneath the sheets...for years...or if you are intent on destroying yourself. This is *the* book of books on depression..and the fight against it.

Well yes, I have problems with this. Conciousness is painful, not from beginning to end, but always so. We're not taught this in our culture, nor ways of dealing with it. Everything has been commodified, our emotions these days. (Even the war on drugs is a commodification of an emotion that the coca farmers of Bolivia pay the price of). I have no hopes from established psychiatry.

Maybe I shouldn't be so intransigent and tendentious.
After all, I've taken a fair bit of Valium in my time.
But has it done me any good?
Off we go again.
